Research Task: The Spirit

Place and Atmosphere:
The comic is set in the city. Bolton, judging by the sign. It seems to be in chaos. It’s night time. We can see that it is windy due to the paper flying around. It is raining. The light is on, so someone is awake.

Panel Progression:
From the second panel we can tell that the setting is inside a studio. More details are made clear from zooming in. We can also see that the phone has been ringing for a long time, suggesting that something has kept it from being answered. The bang in the third panel is very ominous and captures the imagination. What happened still isn’t made clear in the fourth panel. What we can see is that whatever caused the bang is at the back of the studio, nowhere near the man asleep in the other room. The room is a mess and the man appears to be laid across an upturned table. We can’t tell if he is asleep or dead. The whole scene lends to the idea that he has been overworked.

How sound adds information:
The sounds tell us that the phone is ringing. By appearing in multiple panels it tells us that the phone the phone has been ringing for a long time. The bang tells us that something has gone wrong. Possibly that something has blown up. We can see that this bang has come from the back room.

How is weather created and how does it add atmosphere?:
The night is made clear by the black background. Wind is made clear by the flying paper. Rain is created by the white lines across the panels. We can also see the pools of rain on the roof. The dramatically dark sky gives a sense of danger. The flying paper gives the idea that you could be hit by a rogue piece any second. The rain also makes the night seem dreary and a place you wouldn’t want to be.
