For this exercise I had to draw the establishing shot from 20 movies/tv shows.
Here’s what I ended up with:


Seeing all the images together like this really brings attention to how different each image is and all the possibilities that a story can start with.
Most of the shows/movies I chose to use were found on Netflix. I tried to vary the genre so as to get a selection that shows range.
I found drawing the main focus and larger details easier. The images with finer details were a lot harder. It was too easy to loose track of which details had been added. They did make for a beautiful picture though.
Moods are established quickly through the images. For example, the image from Gilmore Girls exudes calm and peace but the image from Modern Family gives the feeling of busyness and laughter.
Information is also fed to us from the first image as it informs us of the place, time and weather. Others things aren’t as clear and the finer details are usually needed to be able to discern them, like what year the show/movie is set in.
My favourite of all the images is the one from Buffy. This is because of the large contrast in light. This just seems to attract me.
