This is where the grid from the last exercise was used. The task was to draw a place I know well, from memory and include as much detail as I could remember. I chose to draw my old house. This is because I spent 15 years living there so I don’t know anywhere better than that house. I did entertain the idea of the city centre as I know it very well but I wouldn’t have been able to draw it all from memory.
I didn’t include every bedroom of the house as I didn’t feel it was important to do so to get sense and feel of the house. I drew in the order of:
- The front of the house. I thought this would be good place to start as you always see the outside before seeing the inside of a house. I also thought that it set the scene well.
- Hallway, as this is what you would have seen next. I tried to layout the rooms so that it would feel like a tour.
- Kitchen
- Front room
- Bathroom
- Garden. This was completed the tour of the downstairs. Next was upstairs
- My mums old room
- My old studio.

I used pencil as instructed in the brief. I feel that using a different medium could have been a better choice to bring the images to life.
The perspective and scale in these images aren’t true to life however this being accurate wasn’t the point of the exercise. I did try to draw as much as I could remember. Some details may be slightly wrong. Some were left out as I couldn’t remember what was there, like which ornaments were on the shelves or which pictures were on the walls.
I tried to draw the images as you would see them if you were stood in the room. I don’t think I did too bad a job though the scales and perspectives are definitely off. Adding sound the images was hard I didn’t know what to choose or how to spell them. I have noticed that I forgot to add which few details, which I thought I had.
This exercise was harder than I expected and brought to light how quickly the memory of a place can fade.
